Sapindus marginatus, commonly known as the Florida soapberry tree, is a deciduous perennial plant in the soapberry tree family, Sapindaceae. S. marginatus is native to the southeastern United States where it is found growing in warm, humid conditions. The tree typically grows between 30 to 50 feet tall with alternating pinnately compound leaves. Individual leaflets measure 2 to 6 inches in length and 1 to 2 inches in width with a leathery dark green epidermis. Sapindus marginatus flowers in spring and bears fruit in summer to early fall with similar golden ball shaped fruit to Sapindus saponaria. The fruit are known to contain high amounts of saponin, which can be used to make soap or wetting agents. Sapindus marginatus can tolerate a variety of soil types including rocky and sandy soils, but it prefers well-draining soils with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. The tree grows best in full sun to partial shade but can tolerate some amounts of shade. It is moderatly drought tolerant but should be watered regularly until established and in extreme dry spells. USDA plant hardiness zone 8a to 10b.

Sapindus marginatus seeds require light scarification with fine grit sandpaper or a nail file, and a 2 to 3 month stratification prior to being sown. Stratification can be achieved by placing scarified seeds in a wet paper towel or wet peat moss and sealed in a plastic bag placed in a refrigerator. After this period of time, plant the seeds about an inch deep in a well draining high organic potting mixture. Germinating pots should be kept indoors, out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 80°F. Germination typically takes 3 to 8 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
