Salvia apiana, commonly known as white sage, is a perennial evergreen shrub in the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to the southwestern United States, particularly California and Baja California, where it thrives in dry, sunny habitats. White Sage typically grows 2 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, with a rounded, bushy form. Its stems and branches are woody at the base, and the plant has long silvery-gray leaves covered in fine hairs that give them a soft texture and characteristic sage aroma. In late spring to early summer, S. apiana produces tall flowering spikes up to 6 feet tall with clusters of small, white to pale lavender flowers, which attract many pollinators. Salvia apiana is often used in xeriscaping, native/pollinator gardens, and for its ceremonial uses. Salvia apiana grows best in full sun and well-draining, sandy or rocky soils and requires minimal water once established. It is highly adapted to dry conditions and can withstand intense heat, making it ideal for arid and semi-arid landscapes. USDA plant hardiness zones 7 to 11.

Salvia apiana seeds should be surface sown and lightly watered or misted into the potting mixture. Lightly add a thin layer of the potting mixture over the sown seeds, making sure light is still able to reach them. Store seeds indoors or in a shaded area and keep the potting medium moist but not soaking wet. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 80°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
