Ricinus communis, more commonly referred to as the castor bean plant, is a perennial flowering plant in the Euphorbiaceae family. R. communis is commonly grown as an ornamental plant throughout the world. The seeds contain oil that has widespread uses in a variety of applications including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, skincare products, and internal combustion engine lubricants. The oil also contains ricin, a water soluble carbohydrate binding protein that is extremely toxic. Do not consume the seeds under any circumstance and keep out of the reach of children and animals.
Plant the seeds between 1 and 1.5 inch deep in a well draining potting soil. Keep moist but not wet between 70°F to 80°F for best results. Germination typically takes 1-3 weeks to occur.
