Rebutia senilis, commonly called fire crown cactus, is a low growing globus perennial plant in the cactus family, Cactaceae. R. senilis is native to Argentina in high elevations. The plant has a bright green stem that only grows about 3 inches wide and tall. The apex of the plant is covered in showy orange-yellow flowers when it blooms in the spring. The stem is densely covered in bristly white spines. Rebutia senilis is grown as an ornamental plant for its compact size and large bright colored flowers. The plant thrives in well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade. It should be more frequently watered during summer and watered less in cooler periods such as winter. USDA plant hardiness zones 9a to 11b.

Rebutia senilis seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Keep the sown seeds well ventilated to prevent fungal growth. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds are extremely small and should be directly sown on top of potting mixture (NOT BURIED). Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Keep sown seeds between 75°F and 85°F for best results. Germination typically takes 1 to 2 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
