Ravenala madagascariensis, known as the Traveler’s Tree or Traveler’s Palm, is a striking, palm-like tropical plant native to Madagascar. Despite its name, it belongs to the bird-of-paradise family (Strelitziaceae) and can grow up to 30–50 feet (9–15 meters) tall. Its large, banana-like leaves fan out in a single plane, creating a distinctive architectural silhouette. In tropical climates, it produces white, boat-shaped flowers tucked between leathery bracts. This iconic species thrives in full sun, rich soils, and high humidity, and is widely planted as an ornamental in frost-free zones. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 10–11.
To germinate Ravenala madagascariensis seeds, soak them in warm water for 48 hours. Sow seeds 1/2 inch (12 mm) deep in a warm, moist, well-draining tropical potting mix. Maintain temperatures of 80–85°F (27–29°C) and high humidity. Provide bright, indirect light and consistent moisture. Germination can be slow, often taking 1–3 months. Transplant seedlings to larger containers once established, and keep indoors or in a greenhouse unless grown in a tropical climate.
