Prosopis glandulosa, commonly known as Honey Mesquite, is a drought-hardy deciduous tree native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico. It typically reaches 20–40 feet (6–12 meters) in height with a broad, spreading crown and feathery, bipinnate foliage. Its fragrant yellow catkin-like flowers bloom in late spring to summer, followed by long, sweet seed pods that are edible and traditionally used by Indigenous peoples. Honey Mesquite thrives in poor, sandy soils and intense sun, and plays a vital role in nitrogen fixation and erosion control in desert landscapes. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 6–9.

To germinate Prosopis glandulosa seeds, scarify the hard seed coat by nicking or soaking in near-boiling water for 12–24 hours until swelling occurs. Sow seeds 1/2 inch (12 mm) deep in a well-draining sandy mix and maintain temperatures of 75–85°F (24–29°C). Keep the soil moderately moist but not wet. Germination usually occurs within 1–3 weeks. Once seedlings have developed true leaves, transplant into larger containers and harden off gradually before planting outdoors.
