Poncirus trifoliata, commonly known as Hardy Orange or Trifoliate Orange, is a deciduous, cold-hardy citrus relative native to northern China and Korea. It features trifoliate leaves, twisted green stems with large thorns, and fragrant white spring flowers. In fall, it produces small, fuzzy, bitter-tasting fruits often used for marmalade or rootstock in citrus grafting. The plant reaches 8–20 feet (2.5–6 meters) in height and is often grown as a dense, impenetrable hedge or ornamental specimen. It tolerates poor soils, drought, and extreme cold. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9.

To germinate Poncirus trifoliata seeds, cold stratify for 60–90 days at 35–41°F (2–5°C) in moist peat or sand. After stratification, sow seeds 1/2 inch (12 mm) deep in a well-draining citrus or seed-starting mix. Maintain temperatures of 70–80°F (21–27°C) and keep soil moist but not saturated. Germination typically occurs in 3–6 weeks. Seedlings should be transplanted into larger pots once they develop several leaves and can be hardened off for planting outdoors.
