Pinus taeda (Piedmont provenance), commonly known as Loblolly Pine, is a fast-growing, evergreen conifer native to the southeastern United States. The Piedmont ecotype is well adapted to inland conditions and reaches mature heights of 60–100 feet (18–30 meters), with a tall, straight trunk and spreading crown. Needles grow in bundles of three and long, narrow cones persist on the tree for many months. Loblolly Pine is widely used in reforestation, timber production, and as a windbreak species. It thrives in full sun and acidic, sandy to clay soils. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 6–9.
To germinate Pinus taeda seeds, stratify for 30–60 days at 35–41°F (2–5°C) in moist sand or vermiculite. After stratification, sow seeds about 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep in a well-draining seed starting potting mix. Keep soil lightly moist and maintain temperatures around 70°F (21°C). Germination typically occurs in 2–4 weeks. Transplant seedlings into deep containers as soon as they are strong enough, and acclimate to outdoor conditions gradually before planting in their final location.
