Pilosocereus leucocephalus, commonly called old man cactus, tuno, and wooly torch, is a columnar perennial flowering cactus plant in the Cactaceae family. Pilosocereus leucocephalus is native to the Central American countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. The plant grows up to 7-20ft tall and branches from the base with short trunks. The stems are dark green with a light blue tinge when premature. Growth characteristics include 7-9 ribs with areoles covered in white fluffy wool with 1-2inch long hairs. Spines are brown and yellow at first and turn gray at maturity. P. leucocephalus flowers are bell-shaped whitish pink on the inside and deeper red on the outside. The flowers measure around 2-3 inches in diameter. P. leucocephalus red spherical fruits contain a juicy red pulp and black seeds. The fruits are small and berry-like, measuring up to 1.5 inches in diameter. This plant is primarily grown as an ornamental, although the fruit is edible. P. leucocephalus thrives in well-draining soil, full sun to partial shade, with more frequent watering during summer and hot periods, and less watering in cooler periods such as winter. USDA hardiness zone 9b-11a.

Pilosocereus leucocephalus seeds require consistent moisture and humidity but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use well draining sterilized soil. Seeds should be sown on the surface of the potting mixture and lightly covered with a thin layer of sand or the potting mixture. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1-4 weeks. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
