Phellodendron chinense, commonly known as Chinese Cork Tree, is a deciduous tree native to China and admired for its compound, dark green foliage and aromatic, corky bark. Reaching 30–50 feet (9–15 meters) tall, this tree forms a broad, rounded crown and displays small greenish-yellow flowers in spring, followed by clusters of black, aromatic berries on female trees. Its thick, cork-like bark has traditional medicinal uses, and the tree is well-suited for park plantings or naturalized groves. It prefers full sun and tolerates a range of soils, including urban conditions. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 5–8.

To germinate Phellodendron chinense seeds, cold stratify them for 90 days in moist sand or peat at 35–41°F (2–5°C). After stratification, sow the seeds 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep in a well-draining, loamy mix and maintain a temperature of 68–75°F (20–24°C). Keep the medium evenly moist with bright, indirect light. Germination may take 3–6 weeks. Once seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant into larger pots and harden off gradually before outdoor planting.
