Passiflora ligularis, also known as the sweet granilla, is a flowering vine in the passifloraceae family. They produce delicious sweet and sour fruit sometimes referred to as “sugar fruit”. Passiflora Ligularis are commonly grown for their beautiful and fragrant flowers as an ornamental plant, as well as for their prolific fruit production. P. Ligularis are hardy to zone 10-12.
Passiflora seeds contain a hard outer seed coat which can reduce and slow germination. For best results, scarify the seeds by scratching the outer surface with a fine grit sandpaper or nail file, then soak the seeds for 24-48 hours in lukewarm to slightly warm water. After treatment the seeds should be sown between 1/2” to 3/8” deep in a well draining potting medium. Germination can take awhile and be sporadic, taking anywhere from 10-350 days. Properly treating the seeds prior to germination will greatly speed up germination.
