Passiflora edulis var. flavicarpa, commonly known as yellow passion fruit, or lilikoi, produce larger, and sweeter fruit than the purple passion fruit (P. edulis). Oftentimes, P. edulis var. Flavicarpa produces flowers and fruit more prolifically as well. Passiflora are beautiful ornamental plants, and a delicious productive food crop as well. Their vining habit makes them excellent for growing along fences. Hardy to zones 10-12.
Passiflora seeds contain a hard outer seed coat which can reduce and slow germination. For best results, scarify the seeds by scratching the outer surface with a fine grit sandpaper or nail file, then soak the seeds for 24-48 hours in lukewarm to slightly warm water. After treatment the seeds should be sown between 1/2” to 3/8” deep in a well draining potting medium. Germination can take awhile and be sporadic, taking anywhere from 10-350 days. Properly treating the seeds prior to germination will greatly speed up germination.
