Pandanus Furcatus or the Himalayan Screw Pine, is a tree that can reach up to 30 feet in height. It has dark green leaves that are 10-15 feet long and 4 inches wide. The fruit is a compound cone-like fruit composed of several drupes, that are red-orange when ripe and are 6-10 inches long.
Extracts from the leaves, stems and roots are used in India to treat dysentery. P. Furcatus prefers full sun to partial shade. They can tolerate the occasional light frost. Hardiness zone: 9-11.
For optimal germination; soak the seeds for 1-5 days prior, changing water daily. Plant the seeds at a depth of two times the diameter of the seed. Planting seeds in sand is recommended, but other potting mixes can work as well. Keep the seeds moist, but not soaking wet, around 75 to 80°F. Germination typically takes 4 to 10 weeks.
