Opuntia humifusa, also known as Indian fig, or eastern prickly pear cactus is a cold hardy Opuntia species that grows as a bushy or tree-like cactus with wide flat stem segments that reach up to 15 feet high and equally as wide. Opuntia humifusa is native to much of North America. It blooms with bright yellow/orange flowers and produces purple/red fruits known as tuna, prickly pear, and cactus fruit, that are a common edible in local regions. Opuntia species are also common ornamental plants and living barrier or land border plants. USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 10.

Opuntia humifusa seeds should be spread across the surface of a sterilized cactus substrate mix. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of substrate mix and mist the surface to settle down the soil and seeds. Cover with a humidity bag, dome, or plastic wrap. Keep in a warm place with partial shade. Seeds will germinate best with high temp in the day and low temp at night. 70-80°F is the ideal temperature range. Seeds should germinate within 7-20 days. Mist or bottom water when the soil is almost dry. Even with optimal conditions, some seeds may have slow and sporadic germination. Place established plants in full sun to partial shade. Too much shade will make cactus and succulents etiolate during growth.
