Oenothera biennis, or Common Evening Primrose, is a biennial wildflower native to North America. It is known for its tall spikes of bright yellow flowers that open at dusk and attract night pollinators like moths. In its second year of growth, it reaches 3–5 feet (0.9–1.5 meters) tall, producing blooms from midsummer through fall. The plant forms a basal rosette in its first year and thrives in dry, disturbed soils, making it well-suited for wildflower meadows, pollinator gardens, and naturalized areas. Evening Primrose has a history of medicinal and culinary use, especially its oil-rich seeds. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 4–9.
To germinate Oenothera biennis seeds, sow them directly outdoors in fall or early spring, or start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Press seeds lightly into the surface of moist, well-draining soil, as they require light to germinate. Keep soil moist and maintain a temperature of 65–70°F (18–21°C). Germination typically occurs within 2–3 weeks. Thin seedlings to 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart once they have several true leaves, and transplant to full sun in well-draining soil.
