Notocactus horstii is a solitary or slow to cluster species of cacti in the family Cactaceae native to Brazil. N. horstii is a medium sized barrel shaped cacti that grows up to 4 inches tall and 6 inches wide in their natural habitat, but can reach up to 12 inches tall in cultivation. The areoles around the crown of the plant are covered in spiny wool. N. horstii usually produce orange to yellow flowers, but colors can sometimes be pink or purple, measuring up to 1⅓ inch diameter that bloom during spring time. Adult plants prefer full sun to partial shade and very well draining soil mixes. Notocactus horstii are hardy the USDA hardiness zones 7 to 10.

Plant the Notocactus horstii seeds on the surface of a well draining potting soil. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and water them in. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep around 70°F to 75°F for best results. Some gardeners use plastic wrap or a humidity dome to retain humidity. Germination typically takes 1-3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
