Nelumbo nucifera, commonly known as Sacred Lotus, is a striking aquatic perennial revered in Asian cultures for its beauty, symbolism, and edible seeds and rhizomes. Native to Asia, it produces broad, circular leaves and spectacular pink or white flowers that rise above the water’s surface. Mature plants can spread 3–6 feet (0.9–1.8 meters) across and are ideal for water gardens, ponds, and large containers. Lotus thrives in warm climates, standing water, and full sun, and will naturalize in shallow bodies of water if undisturbed. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 4–10 (rhizomes must be protected in colder zones).
To germinate Nelumbo nucifera seeds, scarify the hard outer shell by gently filing or nicking it until the inner layer is visible, then soak in warm water. Replace water daily and keep at 75–85°F (24–29°C). Seeds usually sprout within 5–10 days. Once sprouts are 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) long, transfer them to a container with a few inches of water and a layer of loamy soil at the bottom. Gradually increase water depth as the plant grows. When established, the lotus can be moved to a pond or larger aquatic container.
