Mimosa quadrivalvis commonly known as sensitive briar, Mimosa quadrivalvis var. nuttallii, Mimosa nuttallii or catclaw briar. belongs to the Fabaceae or Legume family and is native to many regions within the Central United States. This is an herbaceous perennial that grows up to 3 feet high, producing bunches of pink-magenta globe-like flowers. Sensitive briar is a low-growing sprawling plant that develops a long, woody taproot an inch or more in diameter. The name "sensitive briar" refers to the common trait within the Mimosoid subfamily where the leaves feign wilting or fold inward when disturbed by touch. USDA Hardiness Zones 9 to 11.
Mimosa quadrivalvis var. nuttallii seeds should be soaked for 12 hours in warm water prior to sowing into soil mix. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep in a well draining potting soil. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet and keep around 70°F. Germination should begin within 10-15 days. Even with optimal conditions, some seeds may have slow and sporadic germination. Established plants prefer moist, but well-drained soil in full sun. Drought tolerant once established but will thrive best with regular watering during dry periods.
