Mammillaria melanocentra is a globus singular to clustering cactus plant belonging to the Cactaceae family. M. melanocentra is native to northern Mexico where it is found growing in dry rocky soils. The stem has protruding tubercles and variable length spines, although they are typically short. Mammillaria melanocentra is a small cactus that typically grows up to 6 inches in height and 4 to 5 inches in diameter. The stem of the plant is green to blue-green in color and is covered in spines that not only vary in size, but also in color. Spines protrude from each tubercle and are gray, brown, and black.  M. melanocentra blooms in the spring with cream colored flowers that have a dull purple to pink midvein on each petal. Some cultivars are also known to have bright purple flowers. Each flower measures no more than a half inch in diameter. M. melanocentra is grown as an ornamental plant for its small size and showy flowers. Mammillaria melanocentra grows best in full sun to partial shade while sitting in well-draining soils. Water the plant adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as it is prone to rot. It is a drought-tolerant species and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. Allow the soil to completely dry out in between waterings. USDA plant hardiness zones 9a to 11b.

Mammillaria melanocentra seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not remain soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain humidity are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown directly on top of the potting mixture. Germinating pots should be kept indoors, out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 80°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
