Lycium barbarum, commonly called the goji berry or the Chinese wolfberry, is a perennial shrub in the nightshade family of Solanaceae native to China that grows up to 8 feet tall at maturity. L. barbarum is an important food crop for much of Asia, primarily grown for the delicious red berries, but the leaves and young shoots can also be cooked as a vegetable or used as a tea substitute. L. barbarum has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine to help treat hypertension, high-cholesterol, diabetes, vertigo, as well as several other conditions. USDA hardiness zone 6 through 9.
Sow the Lycium barbarum seeds on the surface of a well draining potting mix. Sprinkle just enough soil on the surface to cover the seeds. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. Place the seeds in a bright area between 65°F and 75°F for best results. Seeds typically take 1 to 2 weeks to germinate, but can take longer. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
