Hypericum perforatum is a perennial herbaceous flowering plant in the St. John's wort family, Hypericaceae. Hypericum perforatum is also commonly known as St. John's wort and is native to Europe and Asia. The herb spreads prolifically by rhizomes and has reddish stems that grow up to 3 feet tall. The leaves are bright green and oppositely arranged with glandular translucent dots scattered on them. The flowers have 5 petals and sepals that are bright yellow and measure 1 inch across. An extract of the plant is known to help treat external wounds and combat depression. Hypericum perforatum is best grown in moist, well-draining soil in full sun to partial shade. Water adequately when the soil is dry. USDA plant hardiness zones 3b to 8a.
Hypericum perforatum seeds require cold stratification pretreatment. This may be achieved by leaving seeds in a small amount of sterilized moist, but not soaking wet, peat moss, sand, perlite, or vermiculite inside a refrigerator for 4 weeks. After cold stratification, seeds should be sown ¼ inch deep and lightly watered in. Sown seeds require consistent moisture, but the soil should not remain soaking wet. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
