Gymnocalycium saglione, commonly called giant chin cactus, is a globus perennial cactus belonging to the Cactaceae family. Gymnocalycium saglione is native to northwest Argentina and grows in rocky soil in high elevations. The stem is singular and globus with a flattened head reaching up to 12 to 16 inches wide and 6 to 12 inches tall. Curved gray spines measuring 1 to 1.5 inches long cover each rib of the plant and are known to turn a reddish color when wet. Flowers form at the apex, are funnel shaped measuring 1 inch in diameter, and are white to pale pink. Flowers bloom repeatedly throughout during the growing season, but spins typically block the flowers due to their large recurved shapes. G. saglione is grown as an ornamental plant and as food crop for the red edible fruit. Full sun to partial shade in a well draining soil mix is ideal. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zone 9b-11b.

Gymnocalycium saglione seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown on top of potting mixture and lightly covered with a thin layer of sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
