Glycyrrhiza lepidota, commonly called American licorice, is a perennial species in the legume family of Fabaceae native to much of North America. Glycyrrhiza lepidota is a perennial plant growing up to over 3 feet tall with long flat leaves and clusters of small white flowers. It is also sometimes known in the United States as "wild licorice," to distinguish it from the related European licorice, Glycyrrhiza glabra. The plant grows in moist soils; although it will grow in heavy soil it prefers sandy and well draining soil. G. lepidota is also a nitrogen fixing plant, using bacteria in root nodules to add nitrogen to the soil around it over time. It grows 16–39 inches tall, and has long tough brown roots which are said to be sweet and were commonly used as food and medicinal by Native Americans. American licorice root is also common for medicinal uses and food flavorings, as well as a sweetener in some tobacco products. USDA Hardiness Zones 3-8.
Glycyrrhiza lepidota seeds should be soaked for 24 hours in warm water and then sown onto a well draining sandy soil mix. Seeds should germinate within 1 to 3 weeks, with ideal germination temperatures of 60ºF to 70ºF. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
