Gleditsia triacanthos, commonly known as Honey Locust, is a fast-growing, deciduous tree native to central North America. It can reach 60–100 feet (18–30 meters) in height and features an open canopy of delicate, pinnately compound leaves that cast dappled shade. The species is notable for its large, twisted seed pods and distinctive, branched thorns, though thornless cultivars are widely used in landscape settings. It tolerates a wide range of soils and conditions, including drought, salinity, and urban pollution, making it a popular shade or street tree. Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 3–9.

To germinate Gleditsia triacanthos seeds, scarify them by nicking the hard seed coat or soaking them in near-boiling water for 24 hours, allowing them to swell. Sow the seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep in a well-draining soil mix and keep at 70–80°F (21–27°C). Maintain moderate moisture and provide bright, indirect light. Germination usually occurs within 1–3 weeks. Once seedlings develop strong root systems and several leaves, transplant them into larger pots and gradually harden them off before planting outdoors.
