Ferocactus viridescens, commonly known as coastal barrel or keg cactus, is a globus to columular perennial evergreen plant in the cactus family, Cactaceae. F. viridescens is native to southwestern United States and northern Mexico where it is found growing in dry sandy soils. This species grows up to 10 inches tall with a foot wide diameter at maturity. The main stem has a bright green edidermis that is covered in slightly curved, flattened spines. The spines are slightly red when newly grown and dull to a gray or tannish color with time. F. viridescens blooms in the summer with yellow to green flowers that typically measure 2.5 inches in diameter. This species is grown as an ornamental plant for its rarity and unique spines. Ferocactus viridescens grows best in full sun to partial shade, sitting in well-draining soil. Water the plant adequately during summer and sparingly during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zones 9b to 11b.

Ferocactus viridescens seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not remain soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown directly on top of potting mixture and lightly covered with sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
