Ferocactus townsendianus is a globs perennial evergreen plant in the cactus family, Cactaceae. F. townsendianus is commonly known as townsend barrel cactus and is endemic to northwest Mexico. The cactus grows up to 1.6 feet tall with a 1 foot wide diameter and is covered in a lime green skin. The plant also has large reddish-brown central spines that curve inwards at the tip and are slightly flattened. Radial spines are more cylindrical and straight. The plant produces yellow or red flowers that bloom in summer and are 2 inches in diameter. Ferocactus townsendianus is grown as an ornamental plant for its dense red spines and showy flowers. Ferocactus townsendianus do best in full sun to partial shade and in well-draining soil. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zones 9a to 11b.

Ferocactus townsendianus seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown directly on top of potting mix and lightly covered with sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
