Ferocactus cylindraceus is a columular perennial evergreen plant in the cactus family, Cactaceae. F. cylindraceus is commonly known as spiny barrel cactus and is endemic to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The cactus grows up to 6 feet tall and 1 foot in diameter. The skin is green and covered in hooked spines that range in color from light gray, yellow, tan, to light red. Older spines turn darker and black. Yellow and red flowers bloom in summer and are 2 inches in diameter. Ferocactus cylindraceus is grown as an ornamental plant for its uniquely colored spines and showy flowers. Ferocactus cylindraceus do best in full sun to partial shade and in well-draining soils. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zones 9a to 11b.

Ferocactus cylindraceus seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not remain soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown directly on top of the potting mixture and lightly covered with sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
