Fatsia japonica is a woody evergreen perennial shrub in the ginseng family, Araliaceae. F. japonica is native to southern Japan and Korea and is commonly named the paper plant. The shrub can reach heights between 3 and 16 feet tall with a sparsely branched stem. The leaves of the shrub are large, simple, and palmate with leathery dark green skin. The flowers are small white clusters forming in late autumn or early winter. Fatsia japonica is grown as an ornamental plant for its ability to thrive indoors. The shrub can also be optimally grown outdoors in shade and rich, well-draining soil. Keep soil consistently moist throughout the warmer growing seasons, and lessen watering during fall and winter. USDA plant hardiness zones 8a to 11b.

Fatsia japonica seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Keep sown seeds well ventilated to prevent fungal growth. Use a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be planted into the soil at a depth of ¼ inch. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Keep sown seeds between 80°F and 85°F for best results. Germination typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
