Ephedra sinica, commonly known as Chinese Ephedra and Ma Huang as well as other names. E. sinica is a native of Northern China and Eastern Asia. It is a perennial horsetail plant in the Ephedraceae family that has an odd growth pattern which produces leafless stalks or branches with a blue-green coloring. The fruits are red and contain small black seeds. E. sinica grows to about 18 inches tall and forms a shrub or bush. The plant has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. E. sinica stems can be brewed into a tea known as Mormon tea. The tea has a stimulant effect similar to caffeine without containing any caffeine. E. sinica can be used to treat nasal congestion and breathing problems associated with narrow or inflamed airways. USDA Hardiness zone of 5-8.

Ephedra sinica seeds should germinate best in a mix of about 50% sand and 50/light well draining potting or succulent/cactus mix. Sprinkle seeds onto the surface of your soil/sand mix and cover with about 1/4" with your soil mix..  Keep pots evenly moist, but not soaking wet, and keep around 70-80°F for best results.  Seeds should germinate within 10 to 30 days. After seedlings emerge, watering should be reduced as the plant establishes itself.  Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
