Echium fastuosum var. blue towers, commonly called tree Echium or tower of jewels, is a flowering biennial or triennial plant (depending on growing conditions) native to San Miguel de La Palma, an island belonging to the Canary Islands with an area of 273 mi2. Echium fastuosum belong to the borage family of boraginaceae. In the first year, Echium fastuosum var. blue towers produce a trunk measuring 3 to 8 feet tall surrounded by a rosette of lanceolate shaped leaves. During the second or third year, they produce an inflorescence that can grow up to 13 feet tall, densely packed with lanceolate leaves and stunning blue flowers. The infloressence can grow at a rate of 2 inches per day. Each plant can produce over 200,000 seeds that are dispersed short distances by wind.  USDA hardiness zones 8 through 10.

Sow the Echium fastuosum var. blue towers seeds on the surface of a well draining potting mix and gently pat them down onto the soil surface. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. Place the seeds in a bright area between 60°F and 70°F for best results. Seeds typically take 2 to 4 weeks to germinate, but can take longer. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
