Echinocereus coccineus is a globus perennial evergreen plant in the cactus family, Cactaceae. The cactus is commonly named scarlet hedgehog cactus and is native to the southwest United States and northern Mexico. E. coccineus grows in clusters with 3 to 15 inch tall stems and has 8 to 11 ribs. The plant is covered in short sharp gray spines and dark green skin. The flowers bloom in late spring to early summer. The flowers are orange, red, yellow, or purple and have both bisexual and male and female flowers. Echinocereus coccineus is grown as an ornamental plant, although its red fruits are also edible. Echinocereus coccineus prefer full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zones 8a to 11b.
Echinocereus coccineus seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not remain soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown directly on top of the potting mixture and lightly covered with sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
