Dalea purpurea or purple prairie clover is a species of flowering plant in the Fabaceae or Legume family that is native to central North America. Dalea purpurea is a perennial herb growing 1-3 feet tall with a woody stem and several branches. Leaves are less than half an inch long and in small sets of leaflets. It has plump seed pods typically containing 1 or 2 seeds. The mature plant has a large taproot 5 to 7 feet deep, which holds moisture and allows this plant to be somewhat drought tolerant. It has dense spiky purple blooms that appear in the summer months and attract many pollinator insects. USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 8.

Dalea purpurea seeds should be lightly scarified for the best germination rates, and sown at a depth around 1/8" inch deep into a moist but well-draining potting mix. Keep soil moist and at temperatures around 70-80ºF. Most seeds will begin to germinate within 1 to 2 weeks. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
