Cucumis sativus, commonly called lemon cucumber, is an annual herbaceous climbing vine that is a member of the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae. Cucumis sativus is native to India and the Middle East. The plant is able to grow 16 feet long as a ground cover or climber. Leaves are alternated and palmately simple shaped with fuzz-like hair covering them. Fruits are spherically shaped measuring 1.5 to 3 inches in diameter. Fruits of this species are also yellow in color, and are produced during summer to fall. C. sativus is commonly grown as a food crop as the fruit offers slightly sweet flesh that is known for combating heart diseases, stress, and constipation. The plant thrives in full sun to partial shade in moist, well draining, nutrient rich soil. USDA plant hardiness zone 2a to 10b.

Cucumis sativus seeds should be soaked in warm water for at least 24 hours prior to planting. Seeds should be sown at a depth of ¼  to ⅛ inch deep and spaced 1 to 2 feet apart. Sow seeds in moist, well draining, nutrient dense soil. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet. Ideal germination temperatures range from 60°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 2 weeks. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
