Cobaea scandens is a climbing herbaceous plant in the phlox family of Polemoniaceae native to Mexico. C. scandens is more commonly called the cup and saucer vine, monastery bells, and cathedral bells. Cobaea scandens flowers are called cup and saucers because the bell shaped purple flowers resemble a cup, and the green calyx resembles a saucer. The flowers are bat pollinated in their natural habitat. The plant is widely grown in cultivation as an ornamental plant. Cobaea scandens is a species heavily studied and documented by Charles Darwin. Cobaea scandens are hardy to zones 9 through 11.
Plant the seeds on the surface of a well draining potting soil and sprinkle just enough soil over the seeds to cover them. Water the seeds in and keep the soil moist but not soaking wet between 70°F to 80°F for best results. Germination typically takes between 10 to 30 days.
