Cleistocactus smaragdiflorus, commonly called the firecracker cactus, is a bushy species of cacti native to Argentina and Bolivia. Plants start out growing upright, but later fall over and sprawl along the ground sening up numerous other branches that eventually fall over themselves. Plants can reach up to 5 feet tall and have a spread of nearly 20 feet wide.  Flowers are relatively small, growing up to a maximum of 2 inches long. What the flowers lack in size, they make up for with their stunning red/pink color with emerald green tips. USDA hardiness zones 9a through 11b.

Plant the Cleistocactus smaragdiflorus seeds directly on the surface of a well draining sterile potting soil mix. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, just enough to cover the seeds, and keep the soil most, but not soaking wet between 60°F and 75°F for best results. Humidity can improver germination, so covering the pot with plastic wrap or a humidity dome may be beneficial. Seeds typically take 14 to 180 days to germinate. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
