Jalapeño pepper is a subspecies of Capsicum annuum and is a shrubby perennial herbaceous plant in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Jalapenos are native to Mexico and are thicker skinned than most peppers. Jalapeno plants reach up to 2 to 3 feet tall with simple ovate alternating leaves. Jalapeno peppers are grown as a food crop as the fruit are globally used to add spiciness to many culinary creations. The plant thrives in moist well draining soil with a slightly high pH, sitting in full sun to partial shade. Water adequate when soil appears dry, allowing the soil to dry in between waterings. Jalapeno peppers do best in hot temperatures, ranging from 65°F to 90°F. USDA plant hardiness zone 4a to 12b.

Jalapeño pepper seeds germinate best when soaked in warm water for 24 hours prior to planting. Seeds should be sown at a depth of a ¼ inch deep and spaced .05 to 1 inch apart to avoid overplanting. Sow seeds in well draining nutrient dense soil and keep soil moist but not soaking wet. Ideal germination temperatures are between 70°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
