Camellia sinensis or the tea plant, is a large, upright, perennial, evergreen shrub with thick, waxy, dark green leaves with jagged or toothed edges. It produces fragrant, white flowers with many golden colored stamens. The classic traditional beverage called tea is made from the leaves, which are cultivated, harvested, dried, and cured in many different processes to produce green, black, oolong, white, gunpowder, and matcha teas.  C. sinensis is sometimes grown as an ornamental or landscaping plant. Plant C. sinensis plants into a rich, well draining soil mix for best results. This plant will do best in full sun to partial shade. USDA Hardiness Zones 6 to 9.

Camellia sinensis seeds should be soaked in water for 12 hours prior to sowing.  Plant the seeds into a very well draining soil mix, peat moss, or a combination of peat moss and sand.  Keep soil mix moist, but not soaking wet, and keep around 70°F.  Seeds should germinate within 1 to 2 months. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
