Astrophytum ornatum also known as Echinocactus ornatus, Astrophytum glabrescens, Star Cactus, Monk's Hood, as well as other names, is a short columnar cactus with unique spine sets and deep ribs. Astrophytum ornatum is in the family Cactaceae and produces yellow or white flowers. A. ornatum are native to a region near Queretaro de Arteaga and Hidalgo, Mexico.  Astrophytum ornatum is the tallest of the Astrophytum genus with a full size of over 6 feet tall and 1 foot wide.  The cactus has been mentioned to have historic traditional medicinal and entheogenic uses but little detailed research has been published on this. Possibly a traditional Peyotillo species. This cactus grows best in USDA hardiness zones of 9 and 10.

Astrophytum ornatum seeds should be spread across a sterilized cactus substrate mix or pure peat moss. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of substrate mix or peat moss and mist the surface to settle down the soil and seeds. Cover with a humidity bag, dome, or plastic wrap. Place the seeds  in a warm place with partial shade.  Seeds will germinate best with high temp in the day and low temp at night. 70-80°F is ideal for daytime temps. The majority of seeds should germinate within 1-4 weeks. This cactus is known to have occasional seeds germinating up to 2 years after sowing. Mist or bottom water when the soil is almost dry. Even with optimal conditions, some seeds may be slow or sporadic in their germination.  This cactus is resilient and resistant to root rot.  Mature plants are cold hardy down to 25°F.  Place established plants in full sun to partial shade. Too much shade will make cactus and succulents etiolate during growth.
