Astrophytum myriostigma, commonly called the bishop’s cap cactus or bishop’s miter cactus, is a perennial flowering plant in the cacti family of Cactaceae. A. myriostigma native to the highland deserts in central and northeastern Mexico. When Astrophytum myriostigma are young, they are easily identified by their globose stem with 3-7 vertical ribs (typically 5 ribs) that are arranged in a star shape. As the plants age, more ribs are added and the plants become more cylindrical in shape growing up to 3 feet tall at maturity. Astrophytum myriostigma areoles do not contain spines, rather a small amount of furry wool. The stems of A. myriostigma are covered with patches of white trichomes used to protect the plant from UV radiation. Plants produce creamy yellow flowers near the apex of the plant measuring up to 2.5 inches in diameter. Plants typically flower during spring and early summer. Fertilized flowers will yield hairy red fruits measuring up to an inch in diameter. Astrophytum myriostigma is commonly grown as an ornamental plant and does well in full sun to partial shade. USDA plant hardiness zone 9-12.
Soak the Astrophytum myriostigma seeds in room temperature water for 12 to 24 hours prior to planting. Plant the seeds ⅛ to ¼ inch deep in a well draining potting mix. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep the temperature between 75°F and 85°F for best results. Germination should occur within 1-4 weeks. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
