Astrophytum capricorne, commonly called goat’s horn cactus, is a species of cacti in the family Cactaceae. Plants are globose when young, becoming ovoid, and eventually columnar with age, reaching up to 4 feet tall when fully grown. A. capricorne is native to northern Mexico and can be found growing throughout the Chihuahuan desert. Plants typically have 8 ribs, with varying prevalence of white wooly patches of trichomes that are dispersed across the epidermis characterized by the genus. The flowers bloom in summer and are yellow with a red center, sweet smelling, and 3 inches in diameter which yield red fruit when pollinated. The spines typically grow 5 to 10 per areole and are 3 inches long. The spines are gray to brown, flattened, and twisted, resembling a goat's horns, giving the species its name.

Astrophytum capricorne seeds should be spread across a sterilized cactus substrate mix or pure peat moss. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of substrate mix or peat moss and mist the surface to settle down the soil and seeds. Cover with a humidity bag, dome, or plastic wrap. Place the seeds  in a warm place with partial shade.  Seeds will germinate best with high temp in the day and low temp at night. 70-80°F is ideal for daytime temps. The majority of seeds should germinate within 1-4 weeks. This cactus is known to have occasional seeds germinating up to 2 years after sowing. Mist or bottom water when the soil is almost dry. Even with optimal conditions, some seeds may be slow or sporadic in their germination. Mature plants are cold hardy down to 23°F. Place established plants in full sun to partial shade.Too much shade will make cactus and succulents etiolate during growth.
