Aloe microstigma, commonly referred to as Cape Speckled Aloe, is a perennial succulent belonging to the Asphodelaceae family in the order of Asparagales. The native range of this species sprawls across the Cape regions of South Africa and southern Namibia. Aloe microstigma has been known to grow both singularly as well as in small clusters with heights varying between 23 and 27 inches tall at maturity. When Aloe microstigma is shaded and well nurtured the leaves can exhibit a deep green hue, if stressed or exposed to excess sunlight this green hue will gradually transition through mild peach gradients into darker orange and red shades. Regardless of what hues are on display, the speckling that this species is known for will always be apparent across all of its leaves. When flowering, the same gradients exhibited by stressed leaves of the plant are displayed as the inflorescence extends over 36 inches in height. Aloe microstigma makes for a unique ornamental with its variety of colors and staggering groups of 1 to 3 inflorescences and will do well in USDA hardiness zones 9b to 11b.
Plant the Aloe microstigma seeds directly on the surface of a well draining soil mix. Lightly cover the seeds with a very thin layer of sand or potting mix, just enough to partially cover the seed. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep between 70°F and 80°F for best results. Germination typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to occur. Keep sown pots in a well bright, well ventilated area, out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
