Allium ursinum is a herbaceous perennial bulbous flowering plant in the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae. Allium ursinum is commonly known as wild garlic or cowleek and is native to much of Europe and Asia. The plant is a monocot and has bright green elliptical leaves that measure up to 10 inches long and 3 inches wide. The flowers are clustered in inflorescent umbles of 6 to 20 white blossoms. Allium ursinum is used for cardiovascular, digestive, and respiratory issues and is known to hold high amounts of magnesium in its leaves. All parts of the plant are edible and the flowers are known to attract pollinators. The herb is best grown in moist, slightly acidic soil sitting in full sun to partial shade. Water adequately when the soil is dry, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. USDA plant hardiness zones 5a to 9b.

Allium ursinum seeds require cold stratification pretreatment. This may be achieved by leaving seeds in a small amount of sterilized moist, but not soaking wet, peat moss, sand, perlite, or vermiculite inside a refrigerator for 2 to 3 months. Seeds should be sown ¼ inch deep and lightly watered in. Sown seeds require consistent moisture but the soil should not be soaking wet. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 3-4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
