Agave lophantha is an evergreen perennial succulent plant in the asparagus family, Asparagaceae. Agave lophantha is endemic to the coastal areas of Texas and northern Mexico. The plant is commonly referred to as thorn crested agave due to the large number of spines that line the margins and tip of each fleshy leaf. The flower stalks of the plant are known to grow up to 16 feet tall and bear light green colored flowers. The plant itself grows no more than 2 feet in diameter and 2 to 3 feet tall with rosette arranged leaves. A. lophantha is grown as an ornamental crop for its thorny yellow and green leaves. Agave thrive in full sun to partial shade and require regular watering through the summer season and reduced watering during winter. USDA plant hardiness zones 8a to 11a.

Agave lophantha seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but the soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well-draining sterilized potting mix. Seeds should be surface sown and lightly covered with a thin layer of potting mix. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 2 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
