Acanthocalycium spiniflorum var. violaceum, commonly called the spiny lilac flower cactus, is a species of cacti native to the Patagonian Andes in Argentina. It is generally a globular solitary species, rarely branching, and reaches 4 to 6 inches in diameter and 8 to 20 inches tall at maturity. Acanthocalycium spiniflorum var. violaceum have 10 to 12 needle-like honey colored spines per areole, and have trumpet shaped violet flowers measuring up to 2.5 inches wide and 3 inches long. The flowers form in a ring around the apex during late spring and early summer. Acanthocalycium spiniflorum var. violaceum is a relatively fast growing species of cacti that is easy to grow and is hardy to zones 9b to 11b.

Sow the Acanthocalycium spiniflorum var. violaceum seeds on the surface of a well draining potting mix. Sprinkle just enough soil over the seeds to cover them, mist with a spray bottle, and cover the soil with plastic wrap or a plastic bag to retain humidity. Keep the soil moist, but not soaking wet, and keep between 70°F and 80°F for best results. Once germinated, slowly uncover over several days to acclimate the seedlings to the ambient humidity. Germination typically takes 1 to 3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
