Acanthocalycium klimpelianum, also known as the spinney lilac flower cactus, is a low growing globus cactus in the family Cactaceae. A. klimpelianum is natively found in northern Argentina growing in dry rocky soils. This species of cactus has a short globus stem with a green to pale green epidermis that measures 4 inches in diameter and 4 inches in height. The stem is covered in brown to gray spines which are medium to long in length and protrude out of yellowish white areols. This species is grown as an ornamental cactus for its larger than self white flowers that resemble a lilac, hence the common name. Light exposure of full sun to partial shade is ideal for this species. Acanthocalycium klimpelianum does best in breathable containers filled with well draining inorganic soils. Water adequately during summer and keep dry during winter as the species is prone to rot. USDA plant hardiness zones 8a to 10b.

Acanthocalycium klimpelianum seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown on top of potting mixture and lightly covered with a thin layer of sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 75°F to 85°F. Germination typically takes 1 to 3 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
